Awards & Competitions

Awards and competitions at a glance

Hong Kong runs a set of open-call awards and start-up competitions, most of them free or low-barrier: the government-led HKICT Awards and Hong Kong Awards for Industries, pitch competitions from HKSTP and the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund, the brand elections run by the CMA and the Brand Development Council, and the Hong Kong Design Centre's DFA Awards. They don't hand out grants (a few carry cash or seed money) — what they hand out is verifiable endorsement, the attention of buyers and investors, and one chance to be remembered by the official and chamber-of-commerce system. This page puts every award's rewards, entry window and eligibility on one ruler.

This fits you if

You already have a product, service or brand you can put on the table, and you need third-party endorsement to convince buyers, investors or mainland channels; or you want one public pitch to buy investor attention.

This is not for you if

What you're short of is money, not reputation — start with government funding, which actually pays out; awards only reimburse in honour. And if your product hasn't launched yet, most of these awards rule you out outright.

What an award buys you — and what it doesn't

Enter an award expecting funding and you will be disappointed. The return doesn't show up on the books — it shows up in whether every later negotiation needs one less sentence explaining who you are.

You get: verifiable endorsement
Winner lists sit on official or chamber websites where any buyer can check them. In mainland channels and public procurement that beats self-authored materials — the other side doesn't have to trust you, only the organiser.
You get: a logo licence and a promotion slot
Most awards let winners put the award mark on packaging, tender documents and websites, and slot you into ceremony, trade-fair and media coverage. This is the most concrete part.
A few give: cash and a desk
HKSTP's EPiC pays equity-free cash (US$60,000 for the overall champion), JUMPSTARTER talks investment plus a Cyberport office, and HKICT Award-winning SMEs get three months of free co-working space at Science Park or Cyberport. These are the exceptions, not the rule.
You don't get: working capital
No award substitutes for a grant like BUD or ESS. If cash flow is the problem, apply for funding — entering awards runs alongside that, it isn't an alternative.

How to choose: start from what you already have

These awards don't sort by industry, they sort by what you can submit — a launched product, a service process, a brand, or a pitch.

  • A launched ICT product or solutionThe HKICT Awards — 8 awards, 24 categories, covering fintech, smart living, smart mobility, business solutions and start-ups; run by the Digital Policy Office with industry chambers organising each stream.[S100]
  • Manufacturing capability, a service process or a transformation storyThe Hong Kong Awards for Industries — led by the Trade and Industry Department, with its five categories organised by the FHKI, CMA, HKRMA, HKGCC and HKYIC respectively.[S101]
  • Your own brand, aimed at the mainland and overseasThe Hong Kong Top Brand elections — jointly run by the Brand Development Council and the CMA, with two new 2026 streams for outbound brands and outbound service brands aimed squarely at going global.[S104]
  • Technology but not yet a market — you want to meet investorsHKSTP's EPiC (a 60-second pitch, three tech tracks, equity-free cash) and the Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund's JUMPSTARTER (for start-ups that have raised under US$20M).[S102]
  • Design capability and you want international exposureThe Hong Kong Design Centre's DFA Awards; and the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions, where the Hong Kong delegation collects close to 300 prizes a year — a well-worn route to technical endorsement.[S106]
  • ESG or green credentials for tendersThe Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (run by the Environmental Campaign Committee with the Environment and Ecology Bureau and the major chambers); its Hong Kong Green Organisation Certification takes applications year-round, free of charge — the lowest bar of the lot.[S108]

Three things to work out before you enter

Timing: most run annually — miss it and it's a year
The HKICT Awards open in spring, close in July and present in November; the industrialist awards nominate in April and close in May; the brand elections take entries in July–August. These windows land at roughly the same time each year, so you can diary them a year ahead.
Eligibility: the Hong Kong link is a hard gate
The HKICT Awards require the entrant to be a Hong Kong-registered company or resident, with a substantial part of the innovative design and R&D drawn from Hong Kong resources; the brand elections require Hong Kong registration and a brand founded in or substantively connected to Hong Kong. A shell company doesn't clear this.
Evidence: it has to have shipped
Outside the student stream, the HKICT Awards require the product or service to have been on the market or in real operation for at least three months, evidenced by delivery notes, invoices or a public announcement. Assembling the evidence usually takes more work than the form.
How to apply
  1. 1

Pick one or two from the matrix — don't carpet-bomb

One set of materials rarely convinces a technical panel and a brand panel at once. Fix the category from what you actually have.

Pitfall: The HKICT Awards explicitly bar the same entry from being submitted to more than one award category.

  2. 2

Check this edition's window on the official page — don't reuse last year's

Every deep page here carries the official link. Deadlines do get extended (DFA 2026 was), but only the official page counts.

Pitfall: Different chambers organise different categories, so the deadlines aren't necessarily the same day.

  3. 3

Assemble the evidence before you touch the form

Company or business registration, proof of at least three months on the market or in operation, and IP documents — those three are the common base.

Pitfall: Judges may ask for a site audit or visit; what's on paper has to match what's on site.

  4. 4

If you win, put the mark to work

The value of an award mark lives in tender documents, packaging, mainland channel negotiations and fundraising decks — not in a social feed.

Pitfall: Logo licences normally come with a term and usage rules; overreach gets chased.

Next steps
  1. 01Right now (August) the one big door still open is the Hong Kong Top Brand elections, closing 31 August — if you own a brand, look today.
  2. 02This year's HKICT Awards have closed and the ceremony is on 19 November; diary next spring's entry window now.
  3. 03Short of money rather than reputation → go back to the funding overview, where the money is actually paid out.

This page covers only open-call awards that any eligible company can enter on its own initiative; invitation-only lists, pay-to-enter rankings and commercial media awards are excluded. Counts, categories and windows change each edition — every deep page carries the official link, which governs.

CityU's HK Tech 300 is both a competition and a funding scheme (seed fund / angel fund); this site treats it as funding, so it isn't in the awards matrix.
